PHOENIX – In efforts to increase inventory in low-to-moderate income housing, the city of Chandler has created a new incentive program for landlords.
The program — called Increasing Rental Opportunities in Chandler — gives landlords a $400 sign-on incentive for each property rented.
Former landlords also may qualify if they have not been active in Chandler’s Housing Choice Voucher program for at least six months.
Chandler’s Housing and Redevelopment Division is on the hunt for new landlords willing to participate in the city’s HCV, also known as the Section 8 program.
With more than 100 families with vouchers searching for housing in Chandler it is becoming increasingly difficult to find affordable housing within city limits.
There are several benefits to participating in the HCV program, including steady monthly cash flow and payment stability.
“We have guaranteed monthly housing payments, that’s one of the enticing things for landlords,” Amy Jacobson, housing and redevelopment manager with the city of Chandler, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.
Tenants pay 30 to 40% of their income towards rent and utilities while Chandler Housing pays the remainder directly to the landlord.
Jacobson reports approximately 4,000 families in need of housing in Chandler. Each month the city of Chandler offers vouchers for housing assistance.
