The annual IndyStar Top Workplaces survey, conducted in partnership with Energage, allows employees to have an important say about their company and work culture.
Labeled an essential business during the coronavirus pandemic, Royal United Mortgage is a place where employees take special pride in their work, particularly in difficult times.
Working with customers to ensure they can afford a home, at a time when many are drawing unemployment or facing other financial constraints, is rewarding work, employees say.
“I am truly helping people,” says Megan Stutts, a loan adviser with the company.
“We still get an opportunity to help move the economy,” says Kevin Stumpf, a loan adviser development manager at Royal. “Everybody’s really working together to be part of something bigger than ourselves.”

The company also is community-minded, employees say, and will pay workers for up to four hours a month that they’re involved in outreach, such as working at a local food bank. That kind of service is encouraged, says Barry Teague, a senior loan adviser at Royal.
The focus on helping customers improve their financial footing and contributing to the greater good is reflective of a welcoming, caring culture, say those who work at Royal.

There’s also ample opportunity for growth within the company. Royal is definitely a workplace where if you want to take on more responsibility and you want to move up the ladder, all you need to do is raise your hand. Do that, Teague says, “and you’re going to be given as much responsibility as you want or you can handle.”
Employees say they feel respected and valued, and that throughout all levels of the company, people are interested their professional and personal development.
“Everyone really cares about your success,” Teague says. “They are all happy that you’re doing the best you can … and you’re being the most authentic person you can be.”
