An inviting patio can be valuable to owners now and when they want to sell. Stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic made the idea of safely socializing outdoors more evident. And most people could use more room to relax, indoors or out.
Some owners are investing now in connecting water, gas and electricity to the outdoors to later tempt home shoppers who want a gas heater and kitchen overlooking the yard.
“We are definitely seeing a focus on creating an incredible outdoor space as the pandemic has continued,” says John L. Scott broker Suzanne Page. “With restaurants and other entertainment venues being closed to indoor guests this winter, and the outdoors feeling ‘safer’ to entertain, we’ve all been spending more social time outdoors than we have in years past.”
There has been an increase in covered outdoor spaces with a small refrigerator and built-in grill with counter space across all levels of residential properties, she says.
“On higher-end homes, we’re seeing that next level with large, architecturally designed outdoor rooms, with full kitchen spaces, dining areas and outdoor furniture arranged to look out on the view,” she adds. “Most of these also have a beautiful outdoor fireplace incorporated into the design, too, whether an actual fireplace, or the modern linear fireplace.”
In this week’s real estate gallery, we look at homes for sale with outdoor living spaces.

Inexpensive home addition: An ignored part of your yard can easily become extra space for entertaining while staying socially distant. Portland designers show how to start with casual seating near a simple planter box, fire pit or water feature. A durable rug, perhaps a TV and heater, in a covered “garden room” can create a year-round place to relax outdoors.
